You were born to be happy and joyous

Ayurvedic psychology and Yogic philosophy state that your mind is composed of three qualities:

  • Sattva – Balance, Purity, Clarity, Harmony, Intelligence, Joy
  • Rajas – Passion, Dynamism, Action, Change, Movement
  • Tamas – Darkness, Inertia, Sloth, Ignorance

It is said that Sattva is the natural state of the mind. Though it may not seem like it in our high-paced mad world, at our core we are balanced, harmonious, and peaceful. We can enjoy a deep connection to intuition which leads to vibrant health mentally, physically, emotionally, romantically, economically, and spiritually.

Rajas and Tamas are like blemishes that hinder our connection to Sattva. When we are too caught up with what others think of us and pursuit of prestige we feel the unsettled, unsatiated, and untamed nature of Rajas. When we do not apply ourselves or lead a non-virtuous lifestyle, the darkness, lethargy, and depression of Tamas manifests. Yet, by walking our dharma or life-path, making choices for the betterment of those around us, and having a healthy connection to what we consider divine, we reap the heaven-on-earth benefits of our birthright – a Sattvic mindset. Read on for a few more ways to cultivate Sattva in your life.

How to Increase Sattva
  • Nutrition: Eat foods that are fresh, organic, whole, high-quality, prepared with love, simple yet nourishing, and easily digested. Strive for a vegetarian diet. Let all meat and meat-derived products be from animals which are treated well. See our Cookbook for 50+ Sattva-Boosting recipes.

  • Good Company: In the wise words of Epictetus, the great Greek Stoic philosopher, “The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.” Surround yourself with angels and you’ll see your wings, surround yourself with devils and you’ll grow horns.

  • Inspiration: A great practice is to set aside ten minutes first thing in the morning or last thing at night to read inspired writings from Sattvic authors on Sattvic subjects. The great spiritual texts, affirmations, and the writings of peace-leaders are great sources to seek.

  • Meditation: Meditation is the best medication. This practice will return your awareness to your core – Sattva. Through reconnecting to Sattva, you will naturally make informed lifestyle decisions to reduce Rajas and Tamas.

    A simple meditation practice is to use the mantra, “So-Hum.” Sit comfortably in a quiet space. Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your breath. On your inhales, mentally repeat the sound “So”. On your exhales, mentally repeat the sound “Hum”. When your mind wanders from the sound of “So-Hum,” gently and kindly bring it back to the mantra.
